Description: The use of chicory in culinary practices goes back to Ancient times and can be consumed both raw, cooked or dried. It is thought that the use of chicory as a coffee alternative may go back to the 1600s and was likely due to coffee shortages. Regardless of its mode of ingestion, it is a highly nutritious plant with high fiber, high mineral and high vitamin content. Chicory acts as a prebiotic by stimulating healthy microbial gut health, soothing digestive activity and helping bowel movements and regularity. Due to it low fat content, it can support weight loss and is said to aid blood sugar regulation.
Anti-inflammatory properties of chicory further promote its action on gut health, as well as aiding to reduce other inflammatory conditions. The reduction in inflammation coupled with its prebiotic action can reduce the risk of cancers, such as skin and bowel cancer.
